UP’s first cyber forensic lab to come up in Lucknow

The state’s first cyber forensic laboratory and training centre will be established at the UP - 100 headquarters on Sultanpur road here, said police. The centre will be developed on the lines of similar labs operational in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Maharashtra.

A senior official said that the police officers / personnel would be trained at the Bhopal centre and some cyber experts would also be hired to help the police in “speedy and effective investigation” of incidents related to cyber stalking, cyber harassment and other crimes carried out through the internet and mobile phone communication -- especially against women and minors. He said the Bhopal laboratory and training centre was considered the best in the country.

UP director general of police (DGP) OP Singh has formed a purchased committee and a technical committee for the new lab, after getting a budget of 4 crore approved from the union government. The lab will be set up under the ‘Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children’ scheme (CCPWC).

In his order dated June 6, 2018, the DGP also asked the committees to work in a timely manner so that purchase of latest gadgets and hiring of cyber experts could be done at the earliest.

The DGP also said in the order that the three-members purchase committee would be headed by additional director general UP-100 Aditya Mishra , with superintendent of police (SP) of the special task force (STF) Abhishek Singh and SP UP-100 Imran Khan as its members. The technical committee would be headed by the inspector general of the STF Amitabh Yash, with two additional STF SPs Triveni Singh and Amit Kumar as its members.

Speaking about the workings of the planned lab, a senior official said that domain experts would be hired to help police personnel learn how to collect digital and cyber-based evidences. “The training programme for the police will be organised with help of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur,” he added.

To recall, the DGP had earlier made IG STF Amitabh Yash the nodal officer of the interstate cyber crime committee.

TOOLS TO BE BOUGHT

Password recovery, email forensics, data retrieval and image authentication software, tools for digital video recorder analysis, CCTV footage analysis and IP/ CDR (call detail records) analysis, cell phone data extractor, integrated telecom data analyser, high-end forensic workstation and a portable forensic lab are some of the tools that will have to be purchased for the new centre.
