3 held for stealing ₹6.88 lakh in gold, from outstation travellers

They recovered gold jewellery worth Rs6.88 lakh. The accused, Shatrughan Sharma alias Chotu, 25, Shakeel Nadaf, 27 and Avinash Sharma, 21, and are from Bihar, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, said police sources.

The accused would target commuters who travel by long distance trains from Mumbai and would steal from them while they were asleep.

The accused were nabbed from different parts of the city by a team headed by senior inspector Mahesh Bagwe. Officials added that apart from targeting commuters while sleeping, they would also steal hand bags from those who had several bags. “The accused would only target passengers who were travelling overnight. They would decide on their targets by listening to conversations and based on their clothes,” said a GRP officer.
