Dahi handi celebrations in Mumbai: 18 govindas injured so far

Two patients suffered fractures after they fell off the dahi handi pyramid

Even as the city celebrates janmashtami with fervour, 18 injuries related to Dahi Handi celebrations were reported across city’s civic hospitals as of 2pm.

Meanwhile, five patients were admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion, of which three had head injuries (HT FILE)

Two patients suffered fractures after they fell off the dahi handi pyramid. Both are admitted to BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, said Dr Avinash Supe, director of medical colleges.

“Their condition is stable,” he said.

Meanwhile, five patients were admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion, of which three had head injuries. “The patients with head injuries are likely to be admitted,” he said.

At KEM Hospital, Parel, seven patients were treated at the outpatient Department.

Sachin Dhuri, a local politician who has set up a help desk for govindas at KEM hospital, said this year they saw fewer injuries compared to last year. “We set up a camp at the hospital every year to ensure support to injured govindas. Seven men have so far been treated for minor injuries. Their condition is stable,” said Dhuri.

The remaining patients are being treated at Rajawadi hospital, Ghotkopar.
