Ensure Metro work doesn’t damage power cables: MSEDCL to MMRDA

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) recently asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to ensure that power cables are not damaged owing to the ongoing Metro works during the monsoon.
MMRDA is the executive authority for most Metro projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Some areas which are under construction for Metro-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Metro-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli) fall under the jurisdiction of MSEDCL, which supplies power to Mulund, Bhandup, Thane, Navi Mumbai, apart from the rest of the state.
The state discom has also asked its field officials to co-ordinate with the Metro authority to ensure all work related to shifting of power cables is undertaken before the monsoon. “We have had meetings with the MMRDA. We have asked them to identify the cables that need to be shifted and to undertake the same on an urgent basis,” said a senior official from the Thane circle of MSEDCL.
MSDECL’s move comes against the backdrop of complaints of power cuts in areas like Mulund and Thane in April 2019. The state discom had blamed the ongoing Metro works for the same. PS Patil, chief public relations officer, MSEDCL said, “We are looking at the damages and shifting of cables regularly.”
MMRDA, however, said shifting of utilities is being done carefully to avoid any damage. “Utility investigation is being carried out through trial trenches at every site where we undertake excavation. In case, a utility is required to be shifted, the owner of the utility is approached for consent. If it’s not to be shifted, we do excavation carefully by avoiding any damage,” said Dilip Kawathkar, joint projects director, MMRDA.
Currently, there are six Metro projects under construction in the city. In 2018, when only three lines were under-construction, the civic body had found 45 spots where drains were damaged.
In a review meeting in April, the civic body had also asked its officials to co-ordinate with the MMRDA and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC), and discuss an action plan to prevent waterlogging and flooding caused by choked drains. MMRC is executing the fully-underground Metro-3 corridor (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz).
