Form statewide committee to maintain hospitals: HC to Maharashtra govt

The committee should look into issues such as “disposal of biomedical waste, appointment of staff, maintenance and hygiene, supply of medicines and medical equipment, and other problems that commonly plague civil hospitals in the state”, said the HC.

Observing that there exists an urgent need to evolve a safe and effective method of disposing of biomedical waste, especially for government hospitals, the Bombay high court, in a recent order, has asked the Maharashtra government to constitute a statewide committee to look into the issue.

A bench of justices Anoop V Mohta and GS Kulkarni ruled that this committee must comprise an elected member of parliament (MP), an elected corporator, and members of municipal authorities. It should look into issues such as “disposal of biomedical waste, appointment of staff, maintenance and hygiene, supply of medicines and medical equipment, and other problems that commonly plague civil hospitals in the state.”
