As an extension of the ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan,’ KDMC aims to make Kalyan a plastic-free city. Deputy commissioner Dahanaji Toraskar from the solid waste Management department said, “Plastic bags which are thrown here and there are a bigger menace and needs to be taken care of soon as they are posing a bigger threat to the environment.”

“We know that we cannot change things all of sudden, but we aim to instill good habits among citizens, and have approached school students who can help us implement the changes. Also, we at KDMC have planned to collect all the plastic at one place ,which is mostly thrown here and there, and then send it for recycling or put it to proper use,” added Toraskar.

The corporation has even planned to charge penalty against the use of plastic bags and have appealed to residents to use cloth or paper bag instead. The shopkeepers too have been asked to come out with measures to deal with the menace.
