Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray is all set to promote himself on social media, and will be inaugurating his Facebook page today. According to him, this is an attempt to connect with the masses, as he felt that the mainstream media was not being fair to him and his agenda was being distorted.

After the inauguration, Thackeray will also conduct a Facebook Live, and answer citizens’ various queries. According to him, the MNS was the pioneer of using the social media during electioneering. “It was the MNS which first used social media during the 2009 campaign, and only after that the BJP picked it up,” said Thackeray.

In the 2014 both parliamentary and assembly elections, the BJP had made effective use of social media, which played a pivotal role in its success. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministerial colleagues have been using this medium to communicate with the masses.

“Initially, I had planned to start a newspaper, but then it depends on advertisements. I realised that was not possible considering there are very few advertisers,” said Thackeray. “I will now use this medium to convey my agenda and programmes,” he added.

Thackeray worked as a freelancer in a leading Marathi newspaper and also played a vital role in Saamna newspaper when he was in the Shiv Sena. The Saamna, started by his uncle Bal Thackeray, has served as an effective mouthpiece for the Shiv Sena. The Sena workers who subscribe to this newspaper are seen to be taking guidance from this medium for years. However, the MNS has been handicapped by the lack any such medium.
