Mumbai to get 11 new swimming pools soon

Tenders for three new pools at Worli, Malad and Vikhroli have been floated while for the ones at Andheri East and West, Dahisar and Govandi are yet to be floated.

Good news for fitness enthusiasts as the city is set to get 11 new public swimming pools.

After being criticised for running just seven swimming pools across Mumbai, most of which are non-functional or poorly maintained, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans four new swimming pools, two each in the eastern and western suburbs. BMC has also plans seven new pools across the city.

Tenders for three new pools at Worli, Malad and Vikhroli have been floated while for the ones at Andheri East and West, Dahisar and Govandi are yet to be floated.

The garden infrastructure cell of BMC is planning to construct spectators’ galleries according to its feasibility and larger surface area to fit 200 people at a time for these new swimming pools.

Vijay Singhal, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We have not finalised the locations in the suburbs yet. There were several other pools suggested but we want to make sure that there is no duplication in the same vicinity.”

BMC has seven public pools in the city––in Dadar, Kandivli, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Andheri, Mulund and Dahisar.

Civic officials expect that the new pools will cater to more citizens. A senior BMC official said, “The swimming pool at Andheri and Ghatkopar witness a major influx of visitors, especially during summer. We are looking for spaces to construct pools in areas near Ghatkopar to cater to the densely populated areas.”

HT had earlier reported that the BMC took more than a decade to complete the repairs of its Chembur pool which is yet to be reopened.
