An 8-year-old girl lost her left hand after it got stuck in a lift. But the most shocking part of the incident was that Archana Tale walked backed home alone and none of the passers-by rushed to her aid. It took Archana 30 minutes to reach home.
Archana’s mother Meena said, “I was shocked to find out that nobody helped her. She walked alone for 230 minutes from her tuition classes to home. She kept telling me Mummy mala doctor kade gheun chal, majha haath tutla (Mummy please take me to doctor, my hand has been severed). In facet, it was she who consoled me. She’s a brave girl.”
The incident occurred around 5pm in Kasarvadvli when Archana was about to attend her tuition class.
“One of her slippers came off her foot and she put her hand through the lift door to grab it. However, a man who was already inside the lift did not see her and started the lift. It was here that her hand [uptil elbow] was severed. What stunned us that the man did nothing to help the girl,” said senior inspector D Dhole form Kasarvadavli police station.
He added that Archana was shifted to KEM hospital after receiving treatment at a local hospital. A case has been lodged against the society secretary, as there was no watchman to operate the lift, and was booked under section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code
Avinash Supe, dean, KEM hospital said, “The girl is doing fine. For now, we haven’t considered a hand transplant”.
KEM is the only public hospital, which has the facility for hand transplant.
The hand, found in the lift, has been donated to KEM hospital.
