There will be no parole for the convicts in the cases involving rape, dacoity and terrorism in Maharashtra as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has cleared the changes in parole norms proposed by the home department making them stringent.
The rapists, dacoits, terrorists and the culprits serving life sentence will not be entitled for the parole anymore.
The Hindustan Times had reported about the decision taken by the state home department. The home department will soon issue the notification of the amendments in the prison rules. Besides rape and terrorist crimes, the accused imprisoned for mutiny against the state, kidnapping for ransom, smuggling of narcotics or psychotropic substances and the prisoners serving the life imprisonment will also not be given parole.
On the backdrop of the Sajjad Mughal, the convict in lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha murder case, the state home department had proposed the changes in the norms for the parole. The department has also proposed the changes in the act to lodge criminal case if convict jumps the parole.
“Currently, almost in all the cases, including terrorist activities, rape and narcotics cases, the parole is granted by the authorities. The convicts in the TADA cases too were granted the parole. The new rules completely bar the parole for six to seven categories, including rape,” said an official from the home department.
The department has also brought down the number of leave days under parole to 45 days from 90 days a year.
