Family members of Preeti Rathi said they want capital punishment for Ankur Panwar, who was convicted on Tuesday. “A person like him has no right to live in the society,” said Preeti’s father Amarsingh.

However, Panwar’s mother, who attended the court hearing, said her son has been falsely implicated in the case.
Preeti had died of multiple organ failure after Panwar threw acid on her in May 2013. Prosecution had claimed that Panwar wanted to marry Preeti, while she wanted to pursue her career and turned down his proposal. This angered Panwar, who even tried to stop her from taking up a job in Mumbai.
In 2013, Preeti had managed to secure a nursing job with the ministry of defence at the INHS Asvini Hospital in Colaba. Panwar was against Preeti moving to Mumbai.
