A day after the arrest of gangster Chhota Rajan’s aide — 59-year-old Ganesh Soradia alias Honey —from Mumbai airport, he told officials he had been posing as a peasant at his wife’s native place in Uttarakhand.
“The accused has made several claims, which we need to verify. He said he had been living the life of a farmer and did not participate in gangland activities,” said a crime branch officer.
The anti-extortion cell officials currently interrogating the accused said they are probing whether Soradia made any overseas trips to meet Rajan prior to his deportation to India last year.
Officials said he is being interrogated about his whereabouts and activities during the past three decades when he was on the run. Officials said he had been managing Rajan’s activities in the country by keeping a low profile and making trips to Mumbai.
During his days as part of a gang, he stayed at Tilak Nagar, Chembur, and was involved in several murder cases. He had been arrested in the Ashok Joshi murder case in Panvel. He was nabbed during another visit there, soon after he landed at the Sahar airport.
Soradia had been arrested in connection with a murder attempt in 1989, involving Anil Parab alias Robinhood — an alleged member of Dawood’s gang — Sunil Sawant alias Sawtya and Sharad Shetty alias Anna.
The accused shot Arun Gawli’s associate, Paul Patrick, who sustained injuries on his chest and leg.
He had been rushed to the hospital. A case of attempt to murder was registered at MRA Marg police station. The accused were gangsters and the crime was committed because of rivalry, said a police officer.
