Suspended over Mumbai cop’s death, bus driver commits suicide

Bus driver Gajanan Shejul, a resident of Ambadi, had been suspended after the accident.

A 56-year-old Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) bus driver, who allegedly ran over a traffic constable eight months ago, committed suicide in Thane on Monday.

Gajanan Shejul, was a resident of Ambadi, and had been suspended after the accident.

On March 11, Shejul was drunk and was driving the bus with 44 passengers from Mira Road to Thane. “As he was driving rashly, Shejul was asked to stop the bus but he drove towards Thane. After all passengers alighted near Gaimukh naka, he hit a tempo. Traffic constable Chandrakant Wamanrao Salunkhe, 44, was standing behind the tempo. He was dragged along with the tempo and he died,” said a police officer from Kasarwadavli police station. Salunkhe’s wife had donated his eyes.

Shejul was arrested. After he got bail, he was suspended by the TMT.

Ravindra Malekar, senior police inspector from Wagale Estate police station, said, “After being suspended, Shejul was depressed. On Monday, he set himself on fire after pouring kerosene over him. He sustained 100% burns and died.”
