Officials said the woman, identified as Akhilabegum Khan, came to Mumbai with her 15-year-old son and brother-in-law to immolate themselves to protest against the government for not providing her with a compensation after her husband allegedly died in police custody.

A bottle of kerosene and a small knife was found in her possession, they added.

“We had detained the three on suspicion and are now finding out other details about the woman,” Deepak Devraj, spokesperson of Mumbai Police, said.

The 35-year-old woman told the police during interrogation that her husband was arrested by Parbhani Police on December 25 last year.

The crime branch of Parbhani Police arrested an officer identified as MS Rauf reportedly responsible for her husband’s death, she said.

She told officials she came to Mumbai to demand her for rights as she was not compensated financially.
