‘Where is My Train’, a mobile application designed specifically for Central Railway (CR) commuters, will soon be introduced on both android and IOS platforms. It will ensure a smoother commute for Mumbaiites, as the application will share the live location of trains, along with the estimated time of arrival.
In order to facilitate live tracking, a Global Positioning System (GPS) device will be placed in all local trains. In addition, the application will also inform commuters of delays and disruptions in the train services.
The tender for the application will be floated by CR next month. “The idea of a mobile application for commuters has been on the agenda for a year. Now that we have an official approval, we can begin the tendering process,” said a CR official.
Meanwhile, the Western Railway (WR) has a similar mobile application called as Digital Interface of Stations for Help and Amenities (DISHA), which shares updates about trains in three time slots. This means that commuters can check the status of trains expected in 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or one hour.
Additionally, the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) is also working on a software, Real Time Information System (RTIS), which will facilitate the sharing of information about the trains in real time. However, the information of the trains on RTIS will be restricted to outstation trains.
