Two-year-old girl falls to death from fourth floor of Kandivli building

The police said they do not suspect any foul play

A two-year-old girl died after she fell from her parents’ fourth-floor apartment in Kandivli (West) around 12.45 pm on Sunday. The girl, Yashee Shah, had slipped through a gap in the railing of her bedroom window.Yashee’s father Manish is an electrician, while her mother is a homemaker. She was their only child. The family stays at Jay Apartments.

A neighbour and her child had been visiting the Shah family at the time of the incident. While Yashee’s parents were both busy with household chores, she walked into the bedroom and started playing with the neighbour’s child, said to be the same age as her.The two were near the window, which was ajar. Within no time, Yashee made her way to the railing, which has a wide gap, where residents dry their clothes. She slipped and fell.

The neighbour’s child ran to the kitchen and told her mother what had happened.Meanwhile, residents who spotted the child’s body on the ground rushed to inform her parents. Her mother had been working in the kitchen, while her father had been in the hall at the time of the incident, said the police.

“The girl was rushed to a nursing home in Dahanukarwadi, where she was declared dead on arrival,” said Mukund Pawar, senior inspector at Kandivli police station.

The police have recorded the parents’ statements. They also spoke to the doctor of the private nursing home where the child was declared dead. Based on these statements, the police said they do not suspect any foul play. They registered an accidental death report.

However, they sent Yashee’s body for an autopsy to a post mortem centre in Bhagwati. The police are awaiting the reports to ascertain the exact cause and time of death. The body was later handed back to the family so they could conduct the final rites.The police have advised residents of the building to baby-proof their homes and keep a watch on their children.

Past incidents

December 19, 2016: A five-year-old girl fell to death from the 15th floor of New Hind Mill MHADA Colony at Ram Bhau Bhogale Marg in Byculla.

While her father was at home, her mother, who is a police constable, was at work. The girl was playing in the corridor when she fell.

January 21, 2017: A 21-month-old boy fell to death from a 14th-floor window of a building at Bandstand in Bandra (West).

The incident took place around 9am. The victim, Soham Chanabasawa Balate, had been playing in the sitting room of the apartment in Sea Bird building. While his parents and grandparents were at home, Soham was alone in the room.

According to the police, the toddler climbed on to the parapet by sliding open the glass window, which did not have a safety grill. He lost his balance and fell. The boy suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot.
