Undertrial facing murder charges ends life in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail

A 26-year-old undertrial, accused of murders, allegedly hanged himself at Arthur Road jail in the early hours of Monday.

According to officers from NM Joshi Marg police station, who are investigating the alleged suicide, Shabirali Garibulla Shaikh was arrested by the MIDC police and had three cases of murder registered against him. Cops said Shaikh had attempted suicide on the jail premises in the past after which he was given psychiatric help.

Rajvardhan Sinha, inspector general (prisons), said Shaikh was an undertrial for the past three years. He had attempted suicide in the past, but was saved by the guards. Shaikh was transferred to a separate cell for inmates who need psychological help and was undergoing treatment.

Sinha said Shaikh tore a strip from a bedsheet and used it to hang himself from the door of the cell he was locked in. The incident took place at 4am on Monday. Shaikh’s suicide came to light after one of the guards spotted his body hanging from the door. Cops said a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
