‘Virtual boyfriend’ uses nude photos to coerce woman to meet him, held
A 19-year-old man was arrested by Bandra police on Friday for allegedly circulating nude photos of a woman he had met on Snapchat in 2017.
The duo had exchanged nude pictures with each other in 2017 after falling in “love” even though they had never met each other in real life.
According to Bandra police, both the 21-year-old victim and the accused hail from Mumbai but the latter was studying abroad. He had sent a friendship request to the woman on Snapchat in 2017 after which they became friends.
After months of chatting on Snapchat and WhatsApp, they fell in love. The accused then sent her his nude photo and requested her to do the same. The woman at first refused but a month later sent him a nude photo of herself.
The accused came to Mumbai in August 2018 and was staying in a hotel in Bandra (West). He started demanding the woman to meet him by threatening her of circulating her nude pictures on social media.
The woman ignored him initially but ten days later, one of her friends informed her that she had received her nude pictures. The woman then found out that the accused had sent her nude pictures to her other friends as well. The woman then approached the police after which he was arrested on Friday.
Cyber-crime investigator Ritesh Bhatia told Hindustan Times, “It’s a case of revenge porn. I have come across 16 such cases where victims have not approached the police. The courage taken by the woman in this case is praiseworthy and victims must come forward to lodge complaints. Revenge porn has become an easy tool for Sextortion. People should exercise extreme precaution when in a virtual relationship.”
