A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Oshiwara, and charged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, for allegedly stalking and molesting a 11-year-old girl.

The incident took place around 9.30pm on Wednesday at Behrampada, when the girl went to a bakery there to buy bread, the Oshiwara police said.

The accused, later identified as Dinesh Singh, realised that the girl was out alone and started stalking her, as per the police complaint. He then made an obscene gesture, walked close to her and touched her private parts from behind.

The girl ran home and told her mother what had happened. The woman approached Oshiwara police station immediately to file a complaint. Based on the girl’s description, the police started a hunt for the suspect, who used to work as a waiter in the same area, and caught him within three hours of the incident. The police are now investigating to see whether he has prior criminal record.

The FIR has been registered under section 354 (criminal force on a woman outraging her modesty), 354 D (stalking) and 509 (word, gesture of act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment of a child) of POCSO Act.

A police officer from Oshiwara police station said Singh was produced before a sessions court on Thursday and has been remanded in police custody.
