MUMBAI: With the first round of admissions to degree courses coming to an end, almost 80-90% seats at coveted colleges have been filled up.

While many seats in the science stream are still vacant, top colleges hardly have any seats left in the arts and commerce stream.

“Banking and Insurance (BBI) course in BCom got filled in the first list while the other unaided courses have less than 10% seats left for the second list. There’s a slight chance of the cut-off decreasing in the second round,” said Indu Shahani, principal of HR College, Churchgate.

She said the college will start regular lectures from July 4.

With almost 50% of the aided section seats filled up by in-house quota students, HR College has decided to bring down the cut-off for BCom admissions by 5% for the second list. “We will allow admission to whoever has scored 90% or above so that we can finish admissions by this weekend and start lectures by next week,” she added.

Vile Parle’s Sathaye College is skeptical of a second list for arts and commerce. Seats in science stream are yet to be filled.

Only the science stream at Churchgate’s Jai Hind College seems to have enough seats for the second and third merit lists. “We hardly have any seats in commerce and arts streams. Arts has become a favourite among youngsters, which is a welcome trend,” said Ashok Wadia, principal of the college.

Colleges are expecting cancellation of admissions by the end of this week, which might be the only reason for a third list.

“Many students apply for traditional courses as a backup and once they get a seat in self-finance courses, they withdraw their admissions,” said Harsh Mehta, principal of SIES College, Sion.
