Muslims from the city attended religious discourses by scholars. Parvez Mandviwala, representative of Islamic Information Center (IIC), said a special sermon, ‘Khutba’, is delivered by religious scholars on this day.

“It talks of Ibrahim’s sacrifices and how we should practice it in our lives. When we cut meat, we divide it in three parts. We give one-third to the poor, irrespective of their caste. Another part is given to friends and relatives, and the remaining is for us,” he said.

Asim Falke, 30, a resident of Kalyan, who works as a sales executive, spent the day with his friends and family. “I offered namaz around 1pm and took my kids out. It is a day of celebrations with family, where we have meals together,” he said.

Keraliites in the city started preparations for the harvest festival, Onam, which will be celebrated on Wednesday.

“We will make a floral rangoli at CST. We have bought 110kg of flowers. It will be on display for the public from 7am,” said Jojo Thomas, president of All Mumbai Malayali Association.

The Ganeshotsav festivities will continue till Thursday. Shashank Sharma, 25, a resident of Thane, who works as digital marketing executive, said, his family has been celebrating the festival for the past 16 years.

“It is a time for reunion with friends and family, I have been having a variety of modaks since the start of the festival,” he said.
