Panel to review auto, taxi fares hiked in past 3 years

MUMBAI : After a delay of more than a year, the Maharashtra government on Monday formed a four-member committee, headed by Mumbai Transformation Support Unit (MTSU) director BC Khatua, to review the taxi and auto-rickshaw fare hikes carried out in the past three years.

Advocate Girish Godbole, former transport commissioner DG Jadhav and chartered accountant Nitin Doshi are other members of the committee. The committee will submit its report on the hikes carried out as per the Hakim panel formula in the next three months.

Mumbai has 38,000 black-and-yellow taxis and more than 1 lakh auto-rickshaws. Lakhs of commuters may get relief if the committee suggests lowering of fares and the government accepts the proposal.

Transport minister Diwakar Raote had announced the formation of a fare review committee, to be chaired by a retired high court judge, in May 2015.
