THANE: Providing a major boost to an upcoming station between Thane and Mulund, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis assured to hand over a 14-acre plot belonging to the Thane mental hospital to the Central Railway (CR) within a month.

Built about a kilometre away from the existing Thane station, the new station at Kopri will alleviate commuting woes of those residing along the Ghodbunder Road and Wagle Estate. Once constructed, the Rs150 crore elevated structure will facilitate 172 slow and 13 fast services, currently operated from the existing Thane station.

Meanwhile, the existing station will handle the operations for outstation trains.

The decision to the transfer of the land was taken on Monday during a meeting between CM and leaders from Shiv Sena at former’s official bungalow. Eknath Shinde, guardian minister of Thane and MLA Pratap Sarnaik had raised the issue of delaying the transfer of the plot belonging to the public health department to the CR.

Currently, the plot has been encroached upon by 200 families which will be relocated by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to expedite the project. Once completed, the new station will have provision for a booking office, bus terminal and commercial plaza.

Moreover, the CR has submitted a technical feasibility report on the proposed station.
