Ten members of a family from Malad, three of them children, and their driver were killed in a collision with a sand-laden truck in blinding rain around midnight on Sunday on the Mumbai-Goa highway, witness to horrific accidents every monsoon.

Police said the Chavan family was returning from Sangam-eshwar, after meeting a prospective bride for the younger son, when their Toyota Qualis, carrying 12 people, collided with the dumper-truck at Dabhil village in Ratnagiri district.

A neighbour of the Chavans was pulled out alive from the wreckage, but in a critical condition.
