The management council of the University of Mumbai (MU) met on Monday and accepted a report submitted by the fact-finding committee on reformatory measures needed to avoid future instances of malpractices in the university. The report highlights why two MU employees involved in the scam should be suspended and legal advice should be sought before taking action on the other six accused (temporary staff).

Also, 138 staff members from the examination department will be transferred and the management council has further suggested that the investigations of this case be handed over to the CID.

The main highlights of the report include the need for installing CCTV cameras and enhancing the security at the Exam House. “Our report also mentions measures such as the need to frisk members allowed in the exam halls, as well as entry to only those with proper identity cards. We have also highlighted the need for controlled access to the entire process,” said S Gadade, the acting dean of the commerce faculty at MU, and the head of the fact-finding committee set up by MU to conduct a parallel inquiry into this incident. Mobile phones too will not be allowed henceforth.

The report submitted by the committee states disciplinary action against those MU employees arrested in this scam. It also suggests ways of securing answer sheets. The committee is also supposed to conduct a full-fledged inquiry into the issue and submit another report with their findings soon. “This was a matter of security lapse, and our inquiry will look into all the loopholes that need to be fixed in order to avoid a repetition in future,” he said.

A day after governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao called for a detailed report from MU vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh about the engineering answer sheet scam, Deshmukh also met the governor on Monday morning. Details of the meeting were not revealed to the media.
