Deputy Commissioner of Police, Port Zone, Qaiser Khalid told Hindustan Times that the CISF men, including assistant commandant Alok Joshi, have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

“The CISF comes under the central government. So we have to abide by certain formalities before arresting them,” Khaled added.

According to the traffic police, constables Pramod Tavde, Sanjay Patil and Sachin Tayde saw a truck came from wrong side and intercepted it.

“Joshi and his 11 subordinates, who were at the gate, started arguing with them. The argument turned violent and the CISF personnel started assaulting them,” said an officer from the traffic police.

The constables called the police control room. “We sent three constables at the spot. When these constables tried to intervene, they too were assaulted,” said Khalid.

They reportedly dragged the constables into the chowky cabin and beat them up. “The CISF personnel did not have any business outside the Malet Bunder,” said Khalid.

The policemen called for back-up and were ‘rescued’.

Five of the injured were sent to St George’s hospital.

Dr T.P. Lahane, dean of JJ Group of Hospitals, said one of the constables was admitted to the general ward with injuries on his cheek and throat.

Four others were discharged after first aid, but three returned complaining of body ache.

We have kept them under observation,” Lahane said.

“We will record the statements of the CISF personnel,” said Rajan Bhogale, senior police inspector of the Sewri police station.

Archana Tyagi, DIG, CISF, was unavailable for comment.

Sources in the Mumbai police said there has been friction over the jurisdiction control between the traffic police and the CISF for some time.
