Abhishekkumar Kushwaha, a native of Uttar Pradesh (UP), had resumed duty on Friday after leave of 32 days. The police said they had not found any suicide note where Kushwaha was found hanging around 8.15pm. After a fellow sailor saw him hanging, he raised the alarm and Kushwaha was taken to the INHS Asvini Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

A defence press release stated that the principal medical officer onboard the ship administered first aid to the sailor and he was subsequently transferred to hospital around 8.50pm where he was declared brought dead. The authorities have informed his family back in Ballia district and that a board of inquiry had also been ordered to be set up in the incident.

Vinod Sawant, senior inspector of Colaba police, said, “The reason behind the death may become clear after his family arrives.”
