On Saturday night, a 26-year-old man had to pay with his life because he apparently took an inordinately long time inside a public toilet.
The incident took place around 8.15pm outside the toilet located adjacent to Mahim slope at Mahim causeway.
“Simon Ningeri, 26, the deceased, was using the public toilet and another local, Santosh Kargutkar, 42, employed with a courier company, was awaiting his turn,” said B Kadam, assistant inspector, Mahim police station.
Kargutkar, who was waiting outside the toilet, started shouting at Ningeri, who was unemployed, alleging that he was taking too much time.
“When Ningeri emerged, Kargutkar and he got into an argument that led to fisticuffs,” said inspector S Tangude, also from Mahim police station.
Kargutkar then started kicking Ningeri. One of the blows struck Ningeri on his genitals and he collapsed to the ground.
Kargutkar quickly fled the spot. Bystanders then rushed Ningeri to a local hospital, where he was declared dead, police said.
“Ningeri has no external injury marks and we are awaiting the post mortem report to identify the cause of death,” said Kadam.
The police later traced Kargutkar around 2.30am near the spot.
He is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, and has been arrested on the charge of murder.
The police are looking for the toilet attendant for the exact version of events.
“What we have pieced together so far is from some people who were passing by,” said Tangude.
“Only the attendant was present throughout the incident in the loo. Hence his testimony will be very important to the case,” said Tangude.
