Patil, 49, was shot dead on Wednesday night when he was returning from a political meeting for the gram panchayat elections in Murbad taluka. The men, who came in an i20, had shot Patil in his head.
The accused were identified as brothers Imraan Khan, 21 and Nisaar Khan, 24, and their cousins Arif Khan, 20, and Firoz Ansari, 21.
“The murder was the result of an old enmity. The accused suspected that Patil was behind the murders of their father, Akram Khan, and uncle, Bablu Khan, 12 years ago,” said Vishwas Nagare-Patil, superintendent of police, Thane Rural.
The i20, which was used by the accused, was stolen from a service centre, where it was being repaired. The accused had also bought three country-made revolvers from Uttar Pradesh, the Kulgoan-Badlapur rural police said.
