A 40-year-old man who had pelted a local train with stones last week was arrested by the Dadar Government Railway Police (GRP) on Saturday. The police are probing if the accused, Anant Jaywant alias Malapa, is the same person who had injured the motorman of Janshatabdi Express earlier this month.

According to the police, Malapa, a resident of Dharavi, was caught red-handed while pelting the train with stones wrapped in a cloth at Sion station.

Malapa, who is unemployed and resides with his parents, was arrested at the station. He was produced in court and has been remanded in judicial custody.

The railway police informed the court that they suspected Malapa’s involvement in the stone-pelting incident between Matunga and Sion stations in which though injured, motorman V Patkar managed to bring the train till Kurla station on August 11.

The stone hit Patkar on his face and the train had to halted at Kurla station.

“We suspect his involvement in the incident. So far, we have not found any evidence against him. We also suspect that he is mentally unstable,” said a senior police officer from Dadar GRP on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
