At present, if there are more than four passengers in a taxi, it can invite a fine from the traffic police. Six people can travel together in the new taxis.
The new taxis will initially ply on the western and eastern express highways and will have the option of being shared with other passengers travelling to south Mumbai during rush hours. The move is being seen as way to beat competition from air-conditioned taxis and the upcoming Metro and Monorail.
“The new taxis are being made by Maruti and will be mainly introduced in suburbs,” said A.L. Quadros, general secretary, Mumbai Taximen’s Union.
