Eighty percent of all illegal hoardings and banners are put up by political parties, according to one official estimate.

“We have deployed men and machinery across the city on a war-footing and will clear the streets by Thursday evening,” said additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani.

Earlier in the day, the high court had told the municipal corporations in the Mumbai metropolitan region to remove illegal hoardings, posters and banners, and initiate criminal proceedings against those responsible for putting them up.
