Azad Maidan case: Man who took permission for rally sent to police custody

Maulana Ahmed Raza Sheikh, the 32-year-old who had taken permission to hold a rally at Azad Maidan that turned violent – leaving two dead and more than 92 injured – has been remanded in police custody till December 10. The crime branch had arrested Sheikh on Monday.

Additional commissioner of police, crime, Niket Kaushik, confirmed that Sheikh was produced before the Esplanade court. Sheikh, a seminary teacher, who runs an unregistered educational trust, Madina-Tul-Ilm, at Kurla (West), was arrested on charges of violation of the terms and conditions imposed by the police while granting him permission to hold the protest rally.

Police said although permission was granted for a gathering of 1,000 to 1,500 people, the gathering swelled to more than 25,000, in violation of the permission. Moreover, conditions of no violence, no traffic disruption et al were also violated.
