“The Sena is doing out of its love for Maharashtrians and Marathi culture. Shivaji Park is the place where the state’s inaugural function had happened and homage had been paid to 105 state martyrs. The Sena will never do anything to spoil its image or sanctity,” an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, said. Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray is the editor of Saamna and the newspaper’s editorials are taken as his views on an issue.

The Shiv Sena-run BMC has drawn up a Rs seven crore project on the beautification of Shivaji Park, but local residents claimed that they are not aware of exactly what was happening till the contractor and his men started digging the area. They demanded stoppage of work.
