The Charkop police said Gandhi was alone at his flat between 3.30 pm and 4 pm. When his family returned, they found the door locked from the inside. They knocked on the door for a while, but when they received no response, they broke down the door and found Gandhi hanging from the ceiling fan with the help of a dupatta. He was then taken to a local hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Vasant Devarkar, senior inspector at Charkop police station, said, “His family said Gandhi had incurred losses on the share market and was going through serious financial difficulties for the past few months.” No suicide note was found at Gandhi’s Mahavir Nagar apartment.

The Charkop police have registered a case of accidental death and his body sent to a Borivli post-mortem centre. Gandhi is survived by his wife, two children and his father.

In another incident, a 22-year-old housewife committed suicide by setting herself on fire on Monday at her Goregaon residence. She was rushed to the hospital and was declared dead on arrival. Police said Vandana Maurya set herself ablaze when her husband was not at home. The couple had got married a year ago and had moved from their Kurar village house only two days ago. Arun Jadhav, senior inspector at Goregaon police station, said, “We are yet to ascertain why she committed suicide.”
