The anti-plastic drive began after the 26/7 deluge in 2005. The BMC has decided to take the campaign further by imposing a green tax on plastic carry bags and plastic bottle manufacturers in Mumbai.

A fine of Rs 10 to Rs 100 has also been proposed on consumers, who use plastic carry bags below 50 microns. “We will clear it as soon as possible and will be sent to the state government for final nod,” said Jaddhav.

Environment secretary, Valsa Nair Singh, said, “The draft proposal to make the plastic ban more stringent is ready and likely to be publicised this month.”
