However, the lack of formal communication to schools has left parents confused. SSC schools are yet to receive a formal circular with details on how the scheme will work.

The government has said that it will invite objections and suggestions from schools and parents before finalising the scheme.

“This is a good move, but parents are still confused,” said Rohit Bhat, principal of Children’s Academy, Kandivli. “For instance, if the student scores his lowest marks in science, can he count the other five subjects for admissions but still pursue science in junior college?” asked Bhat.

Presently, a student needs at least 40 per cent in science to be able to get into the science stream.

The lack of clear instructions to schools means that principals have been fielding a barrage of calls ever since parents and students heard the news. “This will benefit below average children, no doubt,” said Sitalakshmi Parameswaran, principal of Modern English School, Chembur.

“But many parents are wondering whether they will be able to implement it this year itself.” The government has said it will be taking suggestions on the matter.

“While this will benefit SSC students, it cannot be a permanent solution,” said Sanjeevani Vichare, whose son is in class 10 at Parle Tilak Vidyalaya.

“The marking systems of all the boards are completely different. SSC students do not get marks as freely as those in other boards and they don’t score well in languages.”
