The victim identified as Parveen Farooqi (32) had sustained 90 per cent burns after she poured kerosene and immolated herself.

The police were not able to record Parveen’s statement and have registered a case of accidental death.

“We have not taken Parveen’s or her husband’s statement. We have registered an accidental death case,” said Police Sub Inspector S. Patil of Mahim police station.

However, according to sources in the police station Parveen set herself ablaze on Saturday after learning about her husband Atyar Farooqi second marriage.

Parveen was a Hindu. She married Farooqi seven years ago, said a police constable attached to the Shivaji Park police station.

A native of Ratnagiri, she had converted to Islam after marriage. The couple has two children.

Seven months ago, Farooqi, a resident of Shiv Shakti Nagar, Mahim, married another Muslim woman.

Parveen recently learnt about his second marriage and was upset.

Parveen had left her marital home six months ago following an argument with Farooqi. She lived alone in another house nearby while the children lived with their father. Frustrated, she set herself ablaze on Saturday at her home.

Her neighbours came to her rescue and informed the police.
