“We have conducted an inquiry into the matter and have found that the incident occurred due to human error,” said a MMOPL official requesting anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media. “We have decided to impose a fine the contractor Simplex and have asked them to spruce up their safety measures.”
There have been four accidents and two deaths at Metro construction sites since work began on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) line in February 2008.
On November 30, two labourers were injured when iron rods used to raise the pillar of a metro line collapsed on a car at Chakala in Andheri (East).
The incident occurred when the temporary scaffolding and the reinforcement cage made of iron rods titled to one side and toppled over.
“The report says the accident occurred due to the removal of support from the scaffolding. It was negligence on the part of the workers and the contractors,” the official said.
The Rs 2,356-crore VAG corridor is being built on a 11.07-km stretch that runs through some of the busiest and most congested parts of the city.
