“We intend to conduct a massive awareness drive on the safety of children after the Ganesh festival. Schools and bus operators will be asked to follow safety guidelines,” Thane police commissioner KP Raghuvanshi told HT on Sunday, adding that buses should be equipped with CCTV cameras.

Referring to the lack of a woman attendant in the Badlapur school bus, he said: “All buses should have women attendants.”

The Badlapur police have issued notices to all schools in the area asking them to appoint women attendants within five days, failing which action will be initiated.

“When it comes to the safety of children, there should be account ability on the part of schools. A nodal person should be appointed by schools whose responsibility it should be to ensure that the children are dropped safely. The principal should be notified after all children are dropped,” Raghuvanshi said.
