The Mahim police investigating the electrocution death of the 21-year-old Abdul Karim Shakil stated that they are awaiting a report from the BEST vigilance team, who are probing the reason for the leakage of electricity into the metal structure of the bus stop.
The officials also stated that following the incident, some locals went on a rampage and damaged some other bus stops in the area.
An officer from the Mahim police station stated that the metal bus stops with illuminated advertisement space are dangerous as the electric boards are fitted on the metal body. This was probably why Shakil was electrocuted, he added.
Dashrath Patil, senior inspector of Mahim police station said, “The team of BEST officials will be able to find which wire came in contact with the bus stop, which led to the incident.” The official stated that relevant action would be taken after they receive the report.
Shakil was electrocuted to death post midnight on Thursday, while he was sitting on the Mahim Dargah bus stop. He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where he was declared dead at around 2.15am.
