In the second consecutive case, an Indian origin US national was arrested by the Mumbai airport Customs with diamond studded branded watches, shoes and gold jewellery worth Rs14 lakh.
Dharmendra Kansara, 38, had come to Mumbai for attending a wedding in the family.
Before him, the Customs authorities had arrested a 64-year-old woman, also an Indian origin US national with gold biscuits, coin and jewellery worth Rs25 lakh.
In the present case, Kansara arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport from Detroit, US via Paris by Air France flight AF 0218 recently. He started walking through the green channel when a Customs batch headed by deputy commissioner Sameer Wankhede diverted him.
Only those passengers who have nothing to declare can walk through the green channel. Examination of his baggage resulted in recovery of three diamond studded Tag Heuer watches, a gold necklace, a pair of white gold-diamond earring, a pair each of Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss shoes and a laptop. In his statement to the Customs, Kansara said that he was not conversant with the rules, hence took the green channel.
He told them while one Tag Heuer watch he was wearing during travel, he was to use the second during the marriage while the third was for his father. The jewellery, he said, was old and belonged to his wife who had arrived in Mumbai two days back.
Senior counsel Sujay Kantawala who appeared for Kansara Kantawala blamed lack of proper display of rules and regulations at the airport that makes it difficult for passengers.
