Dadar residents angry as car park converted into dance class

Residents of Dadar-based housing society, AR House, have alleged that their neighbouring building Dhuru has violated rules by converting their car parking space into a commercial dance class.
The classes, held in the four-storey building on North Gokhale road in Dadar (West), was covered from all sides with jute mats until the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed them on February 18 because a parking lot should be open as per the development control rules. “We have removed the mats covering the parking stilt. No commercial activity can operate in a parking area,” said Devendra Jain, assistant municipal commissioner, G/North ward.
But the residents say the classes are still going on. They also approached the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DMC) are still awaiting action. “Commercial activity shouldn’t be allowed in a parking lot. We are looking into the matter,” said Kishor Kshirsagar, DMC.
“Though the mats are removed the classes are still going on. BMC charges only Rs 100 for the parking stilt but it is used as dance classes,” said Abhay Govekar, a resident of AR House.
Dhuru was donated to the Social Service League, an NGO. The NGO rented out the ground floor of the building, reserved for car parking, to the Phulawa’s School of Dance and Gymnastics.
The trustee of the Social Service League defended the dance classes calling it a ‘non-commercial’ activity. Bal Sadwelkar, a trustee of the league, said they have the required permissions.
