The women residing in that building poured kerosene on themselves and threatened to set themselves on fire if the civic officials proceeded with the demolition.

In view of the situation and also due to the lack of women constables present with them at the spot, the civic body decided to postpone the drive.

Since Saturday, three buildings in that area have been demolished. Four months ago, the additional floors to the structure were not demolished on humanitarian grounds due to the rainy season.

“These original structures belong to the local fishemen who then sold the houses to others. The entire building is illegal and also violates the coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) rules,” said a civic official.
