Trade unions affiliated with the Nationalist Congress Party on Tuesday showed their support for deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar on Tuesday.
Pawar was felicitated at a huge rally organised by the Sharad Rao-led Municipal Mazdoor Union and other unions at the Kamgar Krida Kendra at Parel. The Mathadi workers’ union, taxi and autorickshaw drivers’ union apart from other workers from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Tarapur, Boisar and Kalyan attended the rally.
Pawar sought the support of the workers for the next BMC and Thane municipal elections. “I promise to fulfill most of your demands by 2011.”
Pawar promised that the annual budget of the state would address the workers’ grievances.
“I promised labour minister Hasan Mushrif that whatever he will ask for in the budget will be granted,” he said. Labour minister Hasan Mushrif and housing development minister Sachin Ahir (both from NCP) were also present for the rally.
Rao requested Pawar to solve the problems of hawkers. “For 30 years not a single licence has been granted to hawkers. They have to pay the fine of Rs 5,000 or go to jail for six months. Please take this cruel law back,” he said.
