Another victim of the July 13 serial blasts succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, taking the toll in the terror attack to 26.
Chandrakant Wankar, 42, a diamond broker, had sustained severe brain injuries and burn injuries to his leg in the blast at Opera House and was being treated at Hurkisondas Hospital in Charni Road.
“The patient was unconscious when he was admitted and had been in the intensive care unit since day one. He was on life support for the last four days and, two days ago, his condition worsened,” said a senior doctor from Hurkisondas Hospital, requesting anonymity. “He died of the massive head injury and complications due to the other injuries.”
Vankar, who lived in Ghatkopar, is survived by his wife, 10-year-old daughter and five-year-old son.
“Vankar was returning home at the time of the blast,” said Ganesh Patkar, Vankar’s nephew. “His financial condition was not very good and his wife is also unwell.”
On Saturday, the narrow lane going to Vankar’s small room in Bhatwadi was filled with relatives and others who had come to offer their condolences. “He was a very simple man. In the morning I saw his wife and two children praying for his recovery in a nearby temple. I think they were not aware of his death,” said Lalit Surana, 42, Vankar’s neighbour and a jewellery shop owner.
