“The pain disappeared as soon as I reached the venue. Running a marathon is way to enjoy and celebrate life. I believe in living life to the fullest,” said Mehta.

Most senior citizens said their participation was a symbol of their fitness and independence.

“If Mumbai is worth living for something, then it’s just for this day,” said Niranjan Bhat, a 62-year-old from Bandra.

And while most exchanged a word or two with their counterparts, Mahdhukar Dhokte, 82, spoke to no one. On a year-long oath of silence, this was his fourth marathon.

“I like participating as it’s a good platform where different people come together. It’s also a chance meet people of the same age,” Dhokte wrote.
