Forest department to acquire 200 acres for Goregaon zoo

There’s good news for the the delayed international zoological park project at Aarey Colony, Goregaon. The forest department will acquire 200 acres of land for the project in three months.

The announcement was made by state forest minister Patangrao Kadam on Thursday during the launch of a book called Wild Maharashtra.

The international park was proposed in 2006 and will be located between the Borivli National Park and the Aarey Dairy. As a large part is built on the dairy’s land, the forest department needed the revenue department to survey it. Officials said 40 of the 200 acres are occupied by encroachments and some land belongs to the agriculture department.

“We are hopeful that we will acquire 160 acres for the park. The revenue department has conducted its survey,” said Sunil Limaye, director, Borivli National Park.
