Shaikh was crossing the street at Shivaji Nagar in Govandi when a Maruti with a drunken man at the wheel jumped a signal. It hit Shaikh, throwing him off balance and entangling his legs in the rear tyres.

“I was in a coma for 15 days. I did not even see the man who ruined my life,” said Shaikh. “Ironically, I was walking to my shop only because I had sold off my motorcycle after a minor accident two years ago,” he said.

Shaikh, the only earning member of a family that includes aged parents and three younger siblings, suffered heavy losses after his work suffered. “I’ve been on medication for a year,” he said.

“Now I have rented a shop and employed a tailor, but I have been losing money because I cannot work on the machine alone. Even if I work for a few minutes, my hands and legs turn stiff,” he said.
