Mahesh Bhatt (48), who is the tenant at the American Express bakery building, has a 300 sq ft shop in the premises since 46 years.

The police and Bhatt said on Saturday Emil Carvalho (45), son of the landlord Ross Carvalho, barged into the premises and beat him with an iron rod. Bhatt, who has suffered fractures and injuries to his limbs, has been admitted to JJ hospital.

Bhatt said that his family has been fighting a legal case against Ross in the small causes court since 2006 for allegedly stopping their drainage and water connections.

“The court had ordered us to start the essential supply restoration but the landlord did not agree. When we tried to start our electric connection, our electrician was beaten by them,” said Bhatt.

Emil was arrested on assault charges and remanded to police custody till Tuesday.
